Selenium is a compound of the important antioxidant Glutathione Peroxidase.  Antioxidants help protect cells and tissues against the damaging effects of free radicals.  Free radicals are small, highly reactive molecules formed by environmental pollution, food processing, frying, microwaving, radiation, smoking and essentially normal metabolism.  Selenium may help to reduce the visible signs of premature ageing by preserving tissue elasticity.  Selenium binds to metals such as lead, mercury, aluminium and silver, minimising their absorption in the body.
