A common name used for the Hawthorn plant is ‘Mayflower’, which comes from the fact that it blooms in May. Greek bridesmaids made bouquets with its flowers, and the Romans placed the leaves in baby cribs to ward off evil. Its popularity declined around the time of Christ when it was believed that the ‘crown of thorns’ was made of hawthorn twigs and it was associated with death.
