Echinacea is a well-researched and documented herb with a reasonably good understanding of how it effects the immune system. Research suggests that the immunomodulatory effects of the herb are largely due to the polysaccharides, the caffeic acid derivatives and the lipophilic components.
Historically Native Americans used Echinacea more than any other plant against skin conditions and illnesses, including wounds and insect bites. It was also employed as a remedy for toothache and joint pain.
Interest in Echinacea waned over the years, however it was rediscovered in the 1980s by consumer interest in disorders that affect the immune system. Echinacea has been designated with the following properties: immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, alterative and vulnerary. Herbalists often recommend it as a prophylactic against mild to moderate colds and influenza. The herb is also known as the “king of blood purifiers”.
