The ancients traditionally presented amber jewels to young children to help protect them from misadventure and help ease growth, especially teething.

Safety is a priority for Amberbebe when manufacturing children’s necklaces.  To offer you the highest safety for your child Amberbebe only use synthetic plastic clasps with a screw thread which has been glued into the barrel of the clasp NOT sterling silver clasps.  Sterling silver clasps are designed for fashion and high end jewellery so that the clasps DO NOT release and so you don't lose your jewellery.  Plastic screw clasps are designed to release if any pressure is applied to the joint.  Cotton is also used for this reason and not silk.

As a registered member of The Amber Association in Poland , Amberbebe guarantee they only sell genuine and authentic Baltic amber, with a 100% money back return policy.  Please beware of other sellers stating they sell "Baltic amber" yet the amber may be mined in China, Africa, Australia, India or Tibet, this is Copal and is not the same as Baltic Amber.  Baltic amber is found only in countries bordering the Baltic Sea.

In the unlikely event that a product is faulty in anyway or for any reason you are dissatisfied, please contact us and we will forward your details to the manufacturer so they can replace your product free of charge or assist you with a prompt exchange, refund or credit.

FAQs

History of Amber

Amber is fossilised tree resin. The original resin came from ancient pines which grew some 40-50million years ago. Amber is not a stone and therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.  Amber stores static electricity, named elektron by the ancient Greeks. Elektron evolved into the English term "electricity." When rubbed, the gem attracts lint. Amber was used to remove lint by the Phoenicians & Etruscans & was therefore nicknamed "Straw Thief" in Turkey. Amber is the lightest weight & softest of all gems (a diamond is hardest). It is one of only a handful of gems of vegetative, not mineral, origin. The others are pearl, jet & coral.

Amber is warm against the skin. In contrast, minerals and glass are heavier and cooler than room temperature. Stones like jade, lapis and turquoise feel cool or even cold to the touch, but amber feels warm. This, along with its obvious sunny colour, is why it is known as “sunshine” to Lithuanians.

True amber is light enough to float in salt water, if not weighed down by other substances (like silver), but it won't float to the top, it floats like soap would in a bathtub. This quality probably helped in its discovery—inhabitants of the Baltic Sea area can still find raw amber washed up on the shore after storms.

Children and Jewellery

All jewellery has been made using the highest quality materials, however children should always be SUPERVISED whilst wearingjewellery. Extra special care must be taken with children under the age of 3 as all jewellery has small components which can cause a CHOKING HAZARD. We recommend that all jewellery be removed prior to sleeping, and other occasions where the child may be left alone.

Is it OK to wear the necklace 24/7 including when asleep?

We recommend you take the necklace off whenever your child doesn't have supervision.  If you would like your child to sleep with the necklace on you can wrap it around their ankle and place under socks or growsuit.

Will water damage the necklace?

We recommend you avoid extended contact with water. With prolonged exposure the thread may become brittle.

How long will my necklace last?

The necklaces are specifically designed for use with children and are therefore extremely durable. With the right care, one necklace will last and become a treasured heirloom to pass down in the family.

My child wants to chew on the necklace, is this OK?

The necklace is made for wearing, not for chewing. The easiest solution is to tuck it under their clothing and the necklace will quickly assume body temperature and the child will ignore it.

Are they safe?

Each necklace is handcrafted in Eastern Europe by experienced craftsmen and are made from ancient Baltic Amber and beautifully designed to follow the centuries old European tradition of children wearing amber.

Are they safe?

As a safety feature there is a knot before and after each bead, so that even in the extremely unlikely event of the string being torn, no beads are lost. Amberbebe necklaces are secured with a traditional screw clasp, not a sterling silver hook and ring!

What is amber made from?

Amber is not a stone so therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.

What is the key difference in Baltic amber?

Baltic amber contains succinic acid - which is not found in amber from other continents.

Why buy Amber from Amberbebe

How is amber collected?

Even though many methods of amber production have been used throughout history, and those introduced in the last century were very perspective and efficient, collecting of amber pieces from the shore remains the most popular and lasting. Even today amber hunters (about 30 persons) on the shore of the Baltic Sea near Karklė or Melnragė, if the cast of the net is successful, can catch 30-50 kg of amber.

Who can wear them?

They and are ideal for both girls and boys to wear. Amber is a lasting worthwhile investment as a treasured family heirloom which can be passed down from generation to generation.

What sizes are the necklaces?

The necklaces are made with rounded smooth beads (not splintered amber beads which are not suitable for children's necklaces) and the bead size ranges from 2-5mm and measure 33cm in length.

Colours?

The colours may vary slightly from the photo due to the natural variations in amber and each necklace is a one off.
