Psyllium is an annual herb. The seeds are enveloped in a thin, translucent, white husk (hulls) and both the seed and the hulls are used medicinally. They have no taste or odour.

Psyllium is mainly used for its mucilage content, most of which comes from the seed coat, or hull. This hull is a water-soluble fibre that forms a gel on contact with fluid. Psyllium absorbs water and in turn increases faecal bulk. This increased bulk can help to encourage the peristaltic action of the colon, and in turn can help to relieve constipation when taken with plenty of water through the day.

Psyllium has also been found to be useful in cases of diarrhoea. In this instance the mucilage absorbs water, helps the consistency of the stool to become more normal, and prolongs gastrointestinal transit time.

Therapeutic Use
A ‘mucilaginous’ herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine to aid in the management of mild constipation. May be helpful in conditions where easy defecation with soft stools is desirable. Drink plenty of water and increase fibre in the diet.

Active Ingredient
Each ‘preservative free’ capsule contains 600mg of Psyllium Seed.

Dosage
For adults: take three capsules with a meal twice daily.

Caution
Always read the label.
Drink plenty of water and increase fibre in the diet.
If symptoms persist consult your healthcare practitioner.
