Sage is a favourite culinary herb that is regularly used in cooking such as to flavouring meat, soups, condiments and other food items. It is also steeped in water and used as a tea. It has a strong, scented odour with a bitter taste.

As well as its culinary uses Sage has a number of medicinal uses. It has been found that Sage is antihidrotic, meaning that it can be useful in cases of excess perspiration and sweating. It is a carminative, helping to relieve distension of the gastrointestinal system caused by gas, and can be of assistance in cases of flatulent dyspepsia. Due to its astringent and antibacterial properties Sage can be used as a mouth wash for inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.
