The name of this herb is derived from the appearance of the fruit, which once split looks claw-like. The botanical name, Harpagophytum, is associated with this appearance, the word originating from the Greek harpagos meaning ‘a grappling hook’.
Devil’s Claw has been found to display anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-rheumatic and bitter properties. One of the main uses that has been attributed to this herb is to relieve joint pain associated with conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis. It has been found that the constituent harpagoside, a glycoside, helps to reduce inflammation that can contribute to joint pain. Devil’s Claw has also traditionally been used to assist in relieving gout.
Therapeutic Use
Devil’s Claw is know to have anti-inflammatory properties and has traditionally been used to provide temporary relief of pain of arthritis and rheumatism.
Active Ingredient
Each ‘preservative free’ capsule contains 450mg of Harpagophytum procumbens root powder.
Dosage
For adults: take two capsules three times daily with a meal.
