The name of this herb is derived from the appearance of the fruit, which once split looks claw-like. The botanical name, Harpagophytum, is associated with this appearance, the word originating from the Greek harpagos meaning ‘a grappling hook’.

Devil’s Claw has been found to display anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-rheumatic and bitter properties. One of the main uses that has been attributed to this herb is to relieve joint pain associated with conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis. It has been found that the constituent harpagoside, a glycoside, helps to reduce inflammation that can contribute to joint pain. Devil’s Claw has also traditionally been used to assist in relieving gout.
