Kelp is mainly used as a sea vegetable and is a group of brown algae. It has large, flat, leaf-like fronds that are usually attached to rocks in 3-46 metre seas. The botanical name ‘Fucus’ originates from the Greek ‘phykos’ which is a derivative of ‘phytein’ meaning ‘to grow’, and refers to the plants length. The second name comes from the Latin ‘vesicula’ meaning ‘a little vesicle’, referring to the air blisters found in the fronds.
Kelp has been found to contain varying degrees of iodine, and it is this content that makes it of particular interest to herbalists. Iodine is a mineral that is used by the thyroid to maintain normal function.
